The Hakata Dontaku Port Festival

Every year more than 200,000 visitors flock the Hakata Dontaku, a traditional event with roughly 830 years of history behind it. During its time, the festival completely takes over the city. A total of roughly 650 organizations participate in the parades held through the Hakata and Tenjin areas of Fukuoka City, and each of the nearly 33,000 people in the parade all walk along wearing costumes. Participants in the parade weave through the streets of the town knocking together rice scoops, stopping at stages and plazas throughout town to perform dances and more.
